PRACTICE THE SEVEN FACTORS OF ENGLIGHTENMENT
(Thera Thich Thong Lac, extracted from DVXP, book 9, printed and public permission by TG. 2011, pp.250-266)

Q.: Dear Master! Please teach how to practice the seven factors of enlightenment and give examples to understand better.

A: Want to practice the Seven Factors of Enlightenment, you must understand clearly the meaning of Seven Factors of Enlightenment before practice. In the Four Foundations of Mindfulness sutta the Buddha taught thoughts in thoughts:

“Again bhikkhus, the bhikkhu lives and reflects thoughts in thoughts toward the seven factors of enlightenment.  Bhikkhus, how is the bhikkhu lives and reflects thoughts in thoughts toward the seven factors of enlightenment.  Bhikkhus, when the enlightenment factor mindfulness is present, the bhikkhu knows "the enlightenment factor mindfulness is present in me", or when the enlightenment factor mindfulness is not present, he knows "the enlightenment factor mindfulness is not present in me". And the non-arisen enlightenment factor mindfulness now arises, the bhikkhu knows that, and the arisen enlightenment factor mindfulness now developped completed by practice, the bhikkhu knows that”. (Satipatthàna Sutta, MN-10)

If a person without experience of practice well is difficult to explain this passage. Now we're back to the seven Factors of Enlightenment sutta, for long time no one ask me about the seven Factors of Enlightenment, now you have a good occasion to ask me how to practice them.

Seven factors of Enlightenment means seven ways used knowledge practice to master of birth, aging, sickness, death to terminate reborn. Seven factors of Enlightenment belong to Hinayana Agamas, Theravada.

Seven (in seven factors of Enlightenment) means seven. Bodhi means enlightenment. Part means spending part, every piece, every practice.

Each of these parts is in a beam of seven practices having intimate contact with each other in the practice to go full liberation, that each practice is the liberation of each part, so called bodhi or the Enlightenment factor.

The first factor of these is the factor of Enlightenment Mindfulness. So what is the Enlightenment Mindfulness.

1- The Enlightenment factor of Mindfulness means liberation, liberation means as Right Mindfulness as the Right Mindfulness in the Eightfold Path, the Right Mindfulness in the Eightfold Path is the Satipatthana, ie so this passage of the seven factors of the Enlightenment Mindfulness has had in Satipatthana sutta. But we should know Mindfulness is good thoughts. Want to practice good thoughts we must start practicing Four Right Effort. So all Buddha's disciplines firstly must practice Four Right Effort, then afterward according to their ability each monk continue to practice; some practice Four Right Effort;some practice the four establishments of mindfulness; some practice the four psychic powers;some practice the Four Immeasurable Minds,… all of the good thoughts aimed to prevent and eliminate the evilness mind in order to detach from desires and from evilness:

"In this gathering of bhikkhus, there are bhikkhus that dedicated his life, focus, practice four foundations of mindfulness. Bhikkhus, such bhikkhus, their presence in these bhikkhus. In this gathering of bhikkhus, there are bhikkhus that dedicated his life, focus, practice the four right efforts. Bhikkhus, such bhikkhus, their presence in these bhikkhus. In this gathering of bhikkhus, there are bhikkhus that dedicated his life, focus, practice the four psychic powers. Bhikkhus, such bhikkhus, their presence in these bhikkhus. In this gathering of bhikkhus, there are bhikkhus that dedicated his life, focus, practice the five faculties. Bhikkhus, such bhikkhus, their presence in these bhikkhus. In this gathering of bhikkhus, there are bhikkhus that dedicated his life, focus, practice the five powers. Bhikkhus, such bhikkhus, their presence in these bhikkhus. In this gathering of bhikkhus, there are bhikkhus that dedicated his life, focus, practice the seven enlightenment factors. Bhikkhus, such bhikkhus, their presence in these bhikkhus. In this gathering of bhikkhus, there are bhikkhus that dedicated his life, focus, practice the Noble eightfold paths. Bhikkhus, such bhikkhus, their presence in these bhikkhus. (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118)

Although among bhikkhus in the group, some are practicing this dhamma, others are practicing other dhamma, but we should notice that all bhikkhus are practicing different dhamma, but they do not practice out of the True Path, and the purpose of these dhammas is to prevent and eliminate the evil mind,  to  arise and grow goodness, although the dhammas have many names, but depending on the bhikkhus’s preferences, the practice dhamma in accordance with bhikkhu' s ability, dhammas do not separate from one to another but reciprocate it makes abundant other, eg practice this dhamma it makes abundant other dhamma, as the sutta taught:

“When in and out breathing are practiced and developped made the four establishments of mindfulness get completed. When the four establishments of mindfulness are practiced and developped made the seven factors of enlightenment get completed. When the seven factors of enlightenment are practiced and completed made the Sanminggets completed”. (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118)

The teachings above we noted that: practiced the enlightenment factor mindfulness it means practiced the Four Right Efforts, because to prevent and eliminate the evilness, birth and grow goodness thought get immediately liberation, only people who live in evilness is no liberation. If any people live in goodness, thousands of people, hundred thousands of people have the freedom equally, no person is no liberated.

So the enlightenment factor mindfulness is another name of Mindfulness. Mindfulness is the four foundation of mindfulness. Four Right Effort practiced on the four foundations of mindfulness. So saying Mindfulness it comes to say about the Four right effort, four endeavours, the mental faculty of effort, the five strength are both the enlightenment factor mindfulness.

Want to practice four Right Efforts must skill in and out breathing. Mindfulness of Breathing concentration means the in and out breathing, the in and out breathing concentration is very effective to prevent and eliminate the evilness. So people that practice mindfulness of Breathing concentration fullness make fullness of Four Foundations of Mindfulness; when the Four Foundations of Mindfulness is fullness it is fullness Seven factors of Enlightenment; fullness of the seven factors of enlightenment causes of Sanming fulfilled. Because the Buddha taught in the above passage, we deduce: practice the seven factors of enlightenment is practice four foundations of mindfulness, practice Four Foundations of Mindfulness is practice mindfulness, practice Mindfulness is practice on the four foundations of mindfulness that is practice Right Effort on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, practice Right Effort compose of: Right View, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action and Right Livelihood. Cultivation Right View, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood is practicing Body Mindfulness, practicing Body Mindfulness is practiced Mindfulness concentration, practice Mindfulness concentration is practice mindfulness of breathing and practice mindfulness of walking meditation. The practice of mindfulness of breathing and practice mindfulness of walking meditation is practice four foundations of mindfulness. Let's listen to the Buddha taught:

“Bhikkhus, while contemplating the body of the body, the bhikkhu resides, zealous, mindful awareness to overcome covetousness in life, in the meanwhile, his drowsiness, oversleepness also residing. While his drowsiness, oversleepness was residing, the enlightenment factor mindfulness is started up with the bhikkhu.” (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118) (no drowsiness, no oversleepness means the mind completely consciously mindfulness, the bhikkhu always knows naturally the breathing going in and going out, no need to inhibit the mind, in other words, the undistracted mind was residing)

So what is the enlightenment factor mindfulness?

As above we have defined, the enlightenment factor mindfulness is good thought, good thought is the thought without greed, anger, ignorance, no conceit of self, uncertainty. The thought without greed, anger, ignorance, no conceit of self, uncertainty is the mind serenity peaceful and do nothing. The mind serenity peaceful and do nothingis the enlightenment factor mindfulness or Bodhi mindfulness.

In this enlightenment factor mindfulness we are thinking, watching all matters we see the good and the evil specific and clearly, no longer the evil conceals that we are mistaken the evil is the good. When thinking, watching specific and clearly all matter is the enlightenment factor investigation.

What is the enlightenment factor investigation?

2. The enlightenment factor investigation means choosing which is liberation, the liberation is the goodness. In Volum 3 of middlelength discourse of the Buddha, page 260, the Mahàcattàrìsaka Sutta, Buddha says, "bhikkhus, while abiding mindfulness so, bhikkhu with wisdom, reflection, thinking that matter, in that time the enlightenment factor investigation begins to start up with that bhikkhu". (Mahàcattàrìsaka Sutta, MN-117). Here the enlightenment factor investigation is a selection of goodness when our mind in a state of mindfulness, mindfulness is undistracted mind, the mind is serene, peaceful and do nothing, from this state of mind we choose the goodness also use the phrase direction the mind easily without the fear of swindle of the mind. There are two ways to choose the goodness:

a- Choosing goodness excludes evil is practicing the concentrated mind released desires for wisdom, which in the sutta teaches: "with wisdom, reflection, thinking that matter, in that time the enlightenment factor investigation begin to start up". When the enlightenment factor investigation starts up that is we know very well what is the good and what is the evil very specific, and we are no longer misled to eradicate the evil and desire easily, ie repelled the evilness in our mind.

Any one who wants to practice the enlightenment factor investigation must keep the mind calm, peace and do nothing, that is the mind awareness, the mind in awareness if investigation is very efficient, it means to prevent and destroy the evilness is easily and direct the mind to eliminate the evil not very difficult. So the sutta taught: "In the meantime the enlightenment factor investigation was practicing to go to completed", which means that we often choose what is goodness and eliminate evilness for our mind was peaceful, serene and do nothing. Thank the peaceful, serene and do nothing, our mind feels liberation very clear and specific, so we prefer to practice the enlightenment factor investigation, because practicing the enlightenment factor investigation brings many benefits of our life which in the sutta said:

"Bhikkhus, while the bhikkhu with wisdom, thinking, watching that matter, the effort out of passive beginning to start up with this bhikkhu" (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118). The effort out of passive it means very diligence, very desire and enjoy practicing the enlightenment factor investigation because feeling the liberation clearly serene in the mind and body.

b- Choosing a phrase of good thought and use it to direct the mind toward right the object which you are practicing. For example you are practicing the first jhana but you use the phrase "stop hearing the sound" or "cessation of thinking", is not right, but you must use "withdraw from desire, from evilness, enter the first jhana" to direct your mind. The choice so called the enlightenment factor investigation. The enlightenment factor investigation is the choosing a phrase for your mind to collect liberation within the meaning of this statement.

Because we felt real serene, we excitement and practice diligently; that diligence in practice called the enlightenment factor effort.

So what is the enlightenment factor effort?

3. The enlightenment factor effort means diligent practice the enlightenment factor mindfulness as taught above which means choose a good thought, a good thought is Bodhi thought, Bodhi thought means liberals thought, so diligently practiced liberation thought is the enlightenment factor effort. Who diligent practice the enlightenment factor effort is the one who lives in goodness, the one who withdraw from sensual pleasures, withdraw from unskillful mental qualities, the one who withdraw from sensual pleasures, withdraw from unskillful mental qualities has a state of blissfulness born from withdrawal, in doing so, the sutta said:

"Meanwhile bhikkhu practiced Enlightenment factor Effort went to perfection. Joy unrelated to the material is started up with this bhikkhu that is ardent and effort. Bhikkhus, meanwhile the joy unrelated to the material is started up with this bhikkhu that is ardent and effort, the enlightenment factor joy begins to start up with him". (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118). Now in our mind has joy, liberal joy is the joy unrelated to the material, it means a pleasure born of withdrawn from sensual pleasures, withdrawn from unskillful qualities as I said above, so pleasure born from withdrawn from sensual pleasures, withdrawn from unskillful qualities is the enlightenment factor joy.

So what is Enlightenment factor joy?

4. The enlightenment factor joy means joy in liberation. What the joy in liberation is like? For example: There is a person who scolds you, see him too sufferings, you do not not angry, do not hate him but pity for him. When you love him then you have an inner joy soothing serenity. That joy is the enlightenment factor joy. If we want to practice the enlightenment factor joy we must enter the mind of withdrawn from sensual pleasures, withdrawn from unskillful qualities, or in other words more understandable we enter the unshaken concentration mind, ie we cultivate the enlightenment factor joy. The enlightenment factor joy is of the mind. When the mind newly has the enlightenment factor joy we make it fulfill, the enlightenment factor delight arises, as in the sutta has taught:

"When the enlightenment factor joy has been practiced to perfection by the bhikkhu, body of the bhikkhu becomes delight, his mind has also delight. Bhikkhus, while this bhikkhu with his mind has the body be delight, his mind also delight, at that time the enlightenment factor delight begins to arises with this bhikkhu" (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118).

So, what is the enlightenment factor delight?

5- The enlightenment factor delight means there is a state liberation of the body because the enlightenment factor delight of the body. When a person enters unshaken concentration mind of withdrawn from sensual pleasures, withdrawn from unskillful qualities, joy and pleasant arise from unshaken concentration mind is the enlightenment factor joy and the enlightenment factor delight. Want to cultivate  the enlightenment factor delight only entered the unshaken concentration mind, so saying the enlightenment factor joy and the enlightenment factor delight is talking about unshaken concentration  mind, and saying withdrawn from sensual pleasures, withdrawn from unskillful qualities is also saying the enlightenment factor joy and the enlightenment factor delight. Saying the enlightenment factor joy and the enlightenment factor delight is saying the result of the  unshaken mind, the result of unshaken mind is the result of four foundations of mindfulness, the result of four foundations of mindfulness is the result of the enlightenment factor mindfulness, the enlightenment factor investigation, the enlightenment factor effort, so the sutta taught:

"And the four foundations of mindfulness, bhikkhus, how to practice, how to fulfill makes the seven enlighten factors completed? Bhikkhus, while contemplating the body depending on the body, the bhikkhu residing, zealous and aware, to overcome covetousness in life, in the meanwhile no drowsiness. Meanwhile no drowsiness was also to dwell, bhikkhus, at that time the enlightenment factor mindfulness is started up with the bhikkhu." (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118). (no drowsiness means the mind always aware, always know naturally the breathing going in and out, need not to inhibit concentration, in other words his mind does not wander, it is residing).

No drowsiness means awakening naturally, awakening naturally is the mind no wandering, the mind no wandering is unshaken mind, the mind unshakes is the unshaken concentration mind, the unshaken concentration mind is the mind withdrawn from sensual pleasures, withdrawn from unskillful qualities, so when we always live in the mind no wander, mind no wander is the Enlightenment factor mindfulness present, presence of the Enlightenment factor mindfulness is the Enlightenment factor investigation present, presence of the Enlightenment factor investigation is the Enlightenment factor effort present, presence of the Enlightenment factor effort is the Enlightenment factor joy present, presence of the Enlightenment factor joy is the enlightenment factor delight present, presence of the enlightenment factor delight is the enlightenment factor concentration present, so the sutta taught:

"Meanwhile the bhikkhu cultivated the englightenment factor delight. The bhikkhu makes the englightenment factor delight go to fullness. A bhikkhu with the body delight, peacefulness, his mind concentrated. Bhikkhus, while the bhikkhu has had delight, peacefulness body, his mind concentrated, in the meantime the enlightenment factor concentration begins to start up with the bhikkhu." (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118).

So, what is the enlightenment factor concentration?

6.- The enlightenment factor concentration includes The Four Saint Concentrations. The Four Saint Concentrations are the first jhana, the second jhana, the third jhana and the fourth jhana. When someone enters those four jhana thanks to effective against the phrase direction the mind to pause all fabrication of the body, should both the body and mind together it means the mind concentrates on the body, the body concentrates in the mind. When the mind concentrated in the body, the body concentrated in the mind, the mind has great and wonderful religious power that makes the mind become malleable, concentrated, workable. At that time the practitioner uses the englightenment factor Renunciation to control his mind by means of the phrase direction the mind.

So, what is the englightenment factor Renunciation?

7. There are two ways to perform the Enlightenment factor Renunciation:

a- Firstly, we do not need to enter the fourth jhana but only with concentrated mind we look at all thing with the notion of detachment, not any thing clinging to our mind. Complete all worldly things that we have to let go clean, as in sutta taught: "The Enlightenment factor Renunciation is practicing by the bhikkhu. The Enlightenment factor Renunciation is making to go to fullness by the bhikkhu. He with the so concentrated mind, skilful looking at things with Renunciation, while The Enlightenment factor Renunciation begins to arise with the bhikkhu". (anapanasati Sutta, MN-118). This is the period we live normally in the concentrated mind, malleable mind as at the time preparing to enter fourth jhana, but do not enter, in that state perform the Enlightenment factor Renunciation.

b- Secondly: the Enlightenment factor Renunciation is direct the mind to Sanming. At that time we enter and reside in the fourth jhana, no suffering, no pleasant, renunciation the pure thoughts means breathing stops completely. When enter this jhana our mind concentrated, pure, not contaminated, not negativity, skilful, easy to use, stable, calm, so we direct it to Sanming is very easy, no fatigue no difficulty, as in sutta says: "so, with the pure mind, not contaminated, not negativity, skilful, easy to use, stable, calm, I conduct the mind, direct the mind towards cessation of desire knowledge. I know as it really is "this is suffering", I know as it really is "this is the way of cessation of suffering", I know as it really is "this is the desires" I know as it really is "this is the cause of desire", I know as it really is "this is the cessation of desire", I know as it really is "this is the way leads to cessation of desire" (Chabbisodhana Sutta, MN-112)

The above passage teaches us dispelled all defilements by the englightenment factor Renunciation specific and clearly, as in the sutta taught: "In the meanwhile the Enlightenment factor Renunciation practiced by the bhikkhu. In the meanwhile Enlightenment factor Renunciation made to go to the fullness by the bhikkhu" (Anàpànasati Sutta, MN-118). When the Enlightenment factor Renunciation is fullness, his mind knew he had mastered birth, aging, sickness, death and stopped rebirth explicitly, as the Buddha said: "I know so, I see so, thanks to knowing that I know my mind had been freed from the sensual desires, freed from the desires "to be", and freed from ignorance desires. When freed, I knew I’m freed, birth is destroyed, the holy life is lived, what should be done is done. Never return to this state again”.

Come here, the practice seven Enlightenment factors was completed.
